Jack Brennan, race co-director for the Tim Schoeny Tour of the Gila, has announced
that a full slate of citizen races is on for the event this weekend.
Races for the public will be held downtown Saturday, May 5, during the downtown
criterium, and again on Sunday, May 6.
The downtown races, for ages 3 and older, are on a closed course.
Race distances vary from 400 feet to two laps of the 1.08-mile criterium course,
depending on age. The Sunday event is a road race from Camp Thunderbird to
Pinos Altos, a distance of approximately 31 miles. The Sunday road race is
limited to those 13 and older.
Saturday's citizens races begin at 1:25 p.m., while the road race departs
Camp Thunderbird at 8:30 a.m.
Registration forms are available at Gila Hike & Bike, located at 103 E.
College Ave., and may be submitted through May 4.
On May 5, registration will be held at the corner of Sixth and Bullard in
front of the Silverado Cabinet Shop. Prior registration is required for the
road race, and there will be no registration held at Camp Thunderbird the
day of the event.
The entry fee for the races is $5 for ages 13 through 16, and $10 for those
17 and older. Those 12 and younger race free.
A bicycle helmet is absolutely required in order to participate in the citizens
races.
